How the need was identified
  • As a result of a research project the previous year looking at underachievement by children of separated families.
Aims of the project
  • To encourage groups of parents to become more involved in the life of the school by providing opportunities for them to learn together.
How the project operates
  • Ten sessions to help parents understand the learning process and the part they play using the toolkit 'Helping your child to succeed' by Alistair Smith and Bill Lucas.
  • Parents evaluation of the above adapted where required, for use with other groups of parents.
  • Events to encourage parents, particularly fathers, to enjoy learning with their child. Events include linking up with the University Science Week, New Learning Bus, Recycling bus etc.
How is the programme innovative
  • The programme emphasised the 'enjoyment' aspect of learning and particularly topics that encouraged fathers to join in.
