How the need was identified A parenting questionnaire was issued and the resulting feedback identified that not enough importance was given to play as a part of their
child's learning.
Aims of the project
  • To raise awareness in parents of minority ethnic groups of the importance of play and how these skills are important for fostering positive interaction with children i.e. reducing behaviour problems,
    building good self-concept and encouraging social, emotional and cognitive growth.
How the project operates
  • The target group was Mirpuri Pakistani and Bangladeshi Parents.
  • Working with Lynda Balding from CAMH and Debbie Marshall a health visitor twelve 2 hour sessions were planned covering areas including:
    how to play with your child, praise and reward. and helping children learn.
  • Provision was made for: interpreters, crèche, transport.
How is the programme innovative
  • This project took the main principles of the Webster Stratton Parenting programme and modified them to take on board cultural sensitivies.
  • Programme was aimed at Pakistani mothers.
  • All material was translated, each session was interpreted by the community link worker.
