How the need was identified As part of CIMA's self-evaluation of responses and communications with parents and schools regarding partnership with parents, inclusion and
involvement with their children in the learning process.
Aims of the project
  • To develop a range of mechanisms to support better partnership with parents through joint exploration and input into information and
    communication processes.
  • To provide this development across the whole service within two years.
  • To explore with parents of children with SEN the opportunities and facilities needed to support development and learning.
How the project operates
  • Provide practice notebooks as a home to service communication mechanism and a home-music service agreement to clarify responsibilities and roles.
  • Hold specific music service evenings for parents to meet teachers and discuss and find out about progress and the easiest communication systems for them.
  • Develop a forum to explore with parents specific objectives for students with SEN to link with CIMA's rapidly growing work in music therapy to CIMA's mainstream tuition and ensemble services, creating social and educational opportunities for these young people and their families.
  • Develop mechanisms to explore cultural opportunities for music education to students living in communities with wide multicultural communities.
  • Develop an information pack for schools, parents and students addressing known areas of interest and concern. Also develop a new parents brochure about music services to be available on entry to
    primary and secondary school.
  • An on-line messaging system for more detailed or private discussion beyond the lesson notebook.
  • Develop parental inclusion in on-line development forums together with teachers.
  • Provide structured but flexible feedback systems to allow queries to be raised as early as possible before they become major issues.
How is the programme innovative
  • The programme encourages the active participation of parents in their children's enjoyment of learning a musical instrument.
