How the need was identified Part of the school development plan and self-evaluation process was to develop early SEN identification process with appropriate intervention
strategies. One aspect of this process was to identify children with reading difficulties.
Aims of the project
  • To train a bank of parents to work with the school to support children with reading difficulties and deliver a developed programme to support inclusion across the school.
How the project operates
  • A project working party was formed, including interested staff (Teachers & TAs) and governors
  • Parents expressed an interest in taking part at a 'Reading Launch' evening.
  • Parents who already help in school were recruited.
  • Governors who had already indicated an interest were recruited.
  • With interested parents preliminary sessions were
    held to:
    i) give guidance for listening to children read in
    general
ii) explaining the 'Catch Up' programme.
  • Availability of parents was determined.
  • Demonstration/training sessions were held with parents & children to 'sample / model' reading sessions.
  • Training was provided by CAISTS, Family Learning Service and a key teacher.
How is the programme innovative
  • To establish a resource bank of 'trained parents' who could actively support children with reading difficulties.
