| How the need was identified |
- Having identified and addressed differences in
boy/girl attainment at KS 2 (closed gap between
boys level 4+ reading and writing from 56% to 15%
in two yrs) we would like to target Early Years and
KS 1 with the aim of engaging more readers and to
try and improve readers assessed at level 2C.
- Our School Improvement
planning day - which
involved Parent Governors - also identified the need
to involve parents more in their children's learning
and led to several initiatives being planned
beginning with an open afternoon with a recruitment
drive.
|
| Aims of the project |
- To engage boys in reading from early years
onwards.
- To motivate reluctant readers
- To involve parents in their child's
reading and
enjoyment of books.
- To involve parents in the life of the school
and for
them to feel equipped to provide a supporting
education role.
|
| How the project operates |
- The project would involve parents, carers and
grandparents in making and using story sacks and
curiosity kits - particularly focussing on texts that
would engage boys. It will also develop parental
involvement in library training skills for children, so
that they would work with small groups in the newly
built and furnished library.
- The project co-ordinator for the school
will lead
development of various groups of parents involved
in different initiatives and so monitor progress. A
parent governor who also works as a classroom
assistant/ library assistant would be involved.
|
| How is the programme innovative |
- Addresses gender issues - boys' attainment in
reading at Key
Stage 1.
- Development of current work - school improvement
plan initiatives to involve parent by targeting certain
skills/ interests and establishing library group to
develop children's skills.
