How the need was identified

Aims of the project
  • To establish equal partnership in learning between parents and staff.
  • To build parental confidence in their own skills in support of their children's learning (true co-educators).
  • To provide a network of support for isolated parents.
  • To encourage a positive perception of school among the few parents who have had bad experiences in their own education.
  • To encourage greater equality of access to learning at home for all children.
How the project operates

The project offers fortnightly hour and a half sessions run in the school hall during school hours. A member of staff leads parents in a themed activity for 30 minutes of the session. The group identifies non-threatening activities to engage in with their child at home. Resources are available to borrow based on the theme for the session.

How is the programme innovative
  • Parents identify the skills that they wish to acquire in order to participate actively in their children's learning.
