How the need was identified

Teachers were becoming increasingly concerned about parental confusion about maths teaching methods and lack of parental support for home reading.

Aims of the project
  • To develop parents' understanding of National Numeracy and Literacy Strategies and methods used to enable pupil learning.
  • To equip parents with skills and competencies to enable them to support their children's learning at home.
  • To develop parents understanding of the importance of self-esteem in developing children's learning.
How the project operates

Workshops to include:
Supporting Numeracy Development (two sessions)

  • Focussing on addition and subtraction used from Yr 1 to Yr 6.
  • Focussing on multiplication and division from Yr 1 to Yr 6.

All practical session where parents try methods and are shown what they should expect their children to do and learn at various stages of development.

Supporting Literacy Development (three sessions)

  • Supporting early reading developments focussing on the use of picture books, easy introduction to texts, the use of phonics and other approaches to reading, use of school and other materials to
    support reading development at home.
  • The teaching of reading using school based resources and how these resources can/ should be used at home.
  • One based on supporting the children's writing development.

The importance of self esteem is learning (one session)

  • Meeting focussing on school strategies to support self esteem development.
  • Introduction to the school's alternative 3 Rs (resourcefulness, resilience and reflection) to develop successful learners.
  • How these strategies can be used to support learning at home.

    Each workshop will reinforce the self esteem workshop.

  • It is an attempt to meet an identified need.
