How the need was identified

Evaluation of the 2001-03 involvement in Health Promoting Schools indicated parents as:

  • Wanting hands on practical activities
  • Having awareness of the need to develop and support healthy life styles
  • Having concerns about the balance between security and safety for their children and developing children's understanding of awareness and risk.
  • A parent governor survey for the Governing Body (Autumn 03) on Parental Involvement indicated parents:

  • Would like whole family involvement in activities.
  • Would like to socialise with other parents and staff.
  • Have busy life styles so a flexible activity would be helpful.
  • Would like to ensure activities are accessible for ESL families.
  • Aims of the project
    • Brunswick Governors, Parents and Staff recognise and believe that children learn best when their parents are actively involved in their children's learning. They aim to build on existing good practice to develop family based activities that will be enjoyable and fun, active, promote of the foundation stage curriculum guidance, support a child's autonomy and independence.
    How the project operates
    • Parents are asked to make their favourite family walks in the catchment area of the Nursery into picture routes that have a child's eye view. Families were encouraged to borrow Nursery resources (eg
digital camera) to illustrate their walks. Submitted walks have been collated and laminated to produce a resource accessible to families at a time that is convenient to them. Possible publication of materials for wider community use.
    How is the programme innovative
    • It is an open, flexible programme for families and the wider community. Links with Health Promoting Schools initiative and Walk to School campaign. Wider publication of resource in leaflet form that can be purchased for a nominal fee.
