How the need was identified As a result of the school's self-evaluation, we have identified accelerated learning as an area for development. The aim of the new project (based on Accelerated Learning in Primary Schools) is to enable more effective access to the curriculum for all children. In order to do this, it is important that parents understand the principles so that they can support their children to the best of their ability, and in turn, become more confident learners themselves.
Aims of the project
  • Our aim is to develop life-long learning skills in our children in order to enhance their learning and thereby raise standards. We can do this more effectively when parents understand the strategies involved and support their use at home.
  • We will give parents the opportunity to work with staff as the new techniques are developed, showing that we appreciate the important role they play.
  • We will give clear information to parents about mind mapping, memory and relaxation techniques, which they may find useful in their own lives.
  • We will identify with parents how they can support their children's learning at home and help prepare them for such activities as SATS.
  • Parents and members of the community will be asked to contribute to the project if they have an area of expertise. The school nurse will begin 'drop in' sessions where she can advise on specific areas such as stress.
How the project operates
  • From January 2004 there will be a series of meetings with staff and parents. All parents will be invited to attend to comply with our ethos as an inclusive school. The meetings will be as follows:
  • How children learn - an introduction to ALBS principles. This will involve all staff and parents.
  • The development of skills for use at home and school for parents and children - memory and mind mapping techniques.
  • The development of coping skills for challenging situations through relaxation techniques.
  • Specific preparation for SATS Yr 2.
  • Specific Preparation for SATS Yr 6.
  • All adults who have access to the children in relation to the project will be police checked in line with the schools current policy.
  • Evidence of demonstrable improvement for children:
  • Much evidence will be more long term, for example improving SATS results.
  • A comparative self esteem questionnaire will be given to the children to determine the trend.
  • How will the programme embed within the culture of
    the school:
  • The programme will be seen in school life in such ways as the following:
  • Lesson plans/ homework tasks.
  • Classroom displays to indicate 'no put down zones'.
  • Good working relationships with parents through staff availability to discuss issues of concern.
  • Through PSHE and Citizenship, with such activities as peer support and the anti bullying council. Issues such as bullying will be dealt with in conjunction with parents.
How is the programme innovative
  • Informs parents of strategies used to enhance learning, enabling them to support their child's learning at home. Development of coping skills for challenging situations.
