| How the need was identified |
Families wanted
to promote the value of
Bilingualism within the schools and also with the
parents and young people. |
| Aims of the project |
- To encourage the parents of children who have
English as an additional language to participate in
the implementation of story sacks to develop their
own literacy skills and those of their children.
- To develop the children's
skills in literacy at home
using story sack to stimulate reading and
language.
|
| How the project operates |
- A volunteer group of parents led by an Ethnic Minority Achievement
Grant Teacher and supported
by community link workers, Bilingual Assistants
and Community Development Officers from the
City Council.
- The project started with parents meeting during the
school day/ evening or both to share ideas with as
many parents as possible.
- The parents gave the time they could afford
to
make the props.
- Parents were also involved in making up cards with
vocabulary in a variety of languages.
|
| How is the programme innovative |
- As part of the story sack project, the Asian women
attend sewing classes. This course will be
accredited by the Open College.
