| How the need was identified |
Through contacts
and consultation with parents,
schools and children. |
| Aims of the project |
- To enable pupils to develop independent language learning skills.
- To
speak to other pupils in their first language.
- To encourage friendships
between bilingual pupils.
- To enable pupils to take a GCSE in their
first
language.
|
| How the project operates |
- Two Community Language Tutors received help from parents to run
the project. In one centre some parents themselves registered for
GCSE Bangla programme through Manor Community College. Both boys
and girls (7-15yrs) from primary and secondary schools attended the
learning sessions.
- Weekly 1.5 hour session between 4.00-5.30pm
- Pupils review their
progress and set targets in consultation with their tutors. Pupils
who wish to take the GCSE are expected to take a mock exam.
- This year
15 children sat for GCSE in Bengali.
- All but three achieved grades
A-C.
|
| How is the programme innovative |
- It enabled bilingual children to develop independent language learning
skills and raise their self-esteem, confidence and attainment.
- It
also helped parents to develop their own language learning skills.
