| How the need was identified |
Officers at Littlehey
wanted to support inmates in
maintaining positive connections with their families,
especially the children and grandchildren aged
eight and under. |
| Aims of the project |
- To increase self
esteem of fathers.
- To develop literacy and communication skills.
- To maintain contemporary
links between father and child through story.
|
| How the project operates |
- Interested inmates attend an informal meeting with Richard Young
and staff from the prison Library.
- Training in reading aloud and selecting
appropriate material.
- Prison provides a 'quiet area' for inmates
to record story.
- Prison posts tape and book to the child.
|
| How is the programme innovative |
- Meets County Council's social inclusion agenda.
- Never before attempted
in the County.
- Provides creative solution for potentially divisive
and insuperable barriers between parent and child.
- Creates talking
point on visits.
