How the need was identified Officers at Littlehey wanted to support inmates in maintaining positive connections with their families, especially the children and grandchildren aged eight and under.
Aims of the project
  • To increase self esteem of fathers.
  • To develop literacy and communication skills.
  • To maintain contemporary links between father and child through story.
How the project operates
  • Interested inmates attend an informal meeting with Richard Young and staff from the prison Library.
  • Training in reading aloud and selecting appropriate material.
  • Prison provides a 'quiet area' for inmates to record story.
  • Prison posts tape and book to the child.
How is the programme innovative
  • Meets County Council's social inclusion agenda.
  • Never before attempted in the County.
  • Provides creative solution for potentially divisive and insuperable barriers between parent and child.
  • Creates talking point on visits.
