Individual project evaluation Not all projects were as well evaluated as others. Features of success included:
- good leadership, clear goals and regular feedback
- establishing links with people or agencies already trusted or known. Those involved became advocates for further development
- linking to school, local or national initiatives and part of school improvement
- using questionnaires
- building opportunities for dialogue about needs and creating a safe forum for discussion made a significant difference to people’s contributions
- good communication and positive relationships built confidence and openness and created a ‘can do’ culture
- peer support. Parents found advice and support from each other very valuable
- addressing issues of isolation especially amongst minority groups
- realistic timescales
- a clear understanding of the project and each person’s role
- awareness that levels of interest fluctuate and simple ideas often work best
- support for partners to assess progress and to persist in overcoming difficulties
- having a variety of people, including governors, involved.
Through working closely with schools, many parents better understood what their children could do and were achieving and helped them feel comfortable to either give praise to their children or expect improvement.
