Fulfilling the chosen 'golden rule' Many of the projects were successful in achieving their chosen golden rule. There was considerable success in finding positive ways to improve relationships with parents, developing learning partnerships, addressing misunderstandings and raising levels of awareness. Some projects addressed the needs of some minority groups and encouraged community organisations to improve access and opportunity. Opportunities provided included lifelong learning, developing health awareness, increasing skills, knowledge and understanding, and improving confidence. Good quality learning materials, booklets and brochures were produced. Information written in different languages led to improved communication and people feeling valued. Resources for use outside school have the potential to raise expectations and achievement. Attending meetings and courses helped parents and carers to understand the work of the school, and provided opportunities to share home-school experiences and concerns. Working alongside children provided good opportunities to understand their learning, acknowledge levels of skill and attainment and to encourage higher achievement. When parents saw the levels achieved and were part of the learning they became more confident, aware of their own learning and were led to expect high standards when supporting their children’s learning at home.
